so yeah, friday i went to work at 11:30am CST, from 12-6pm, afterwards going to a movie with the wifey, when we got back to my place afterwards, i went to check my email and BAM
"Windows was unable to successfuly start."
so yeah, ive been computerless since friday(im at school now)and i have no idea what im gonna do about it, best buy wants $60 to Diagnose, $90 to reinstall the OS, $90 to backup my files, so i might just try to leech a cheap new computer from my mom since the bday is in 2 months anyways......this sucks >_<

There's plenty you can do to get around using Windows.
Hold F8(one of the F's, think it's 8) while windows starts up to open a DOS menu asking which mode to start windows in. I believe you will have a choice between safe mode, last working settings, normally, and some other stuff. I would try last working settings first, then safe mode otherwise. If you still can't get in, you're pretty much screwed. Now, what you should do then, is back up all your files and then completely reformat and reinstall windows. Yeah, you'll need to reupdate FFXI when you reinstall, but its a small price to pay. Your comp will run like new.

thats where im at now Vin...i can get to the screen that says
"Start with last known working settings" "Start in Safe Mode" "Start normally"
all that crap, but it gets to the Windows XP loading screen(the one with that little bar that keeps filling from left to right), then a blue backgrounded window pops up momentarilly, then the computer shuts down, and reboots itself to the same damn screen
i think im gonna take this opportunitey to guilt my mom into getting me a relatively cheap desktop(ive only played ffxi on my laptop) so i can hook up my stereo surround sound, and on top of that, ill reformat the laptop, and have a 2nd computer again(god i miss having two while playin ffxi, having resources available whenever you want is such a blessing) and ill be able to use all my progs. from school(flash, dreamweaver, after affects, photoshop, etc.) not to mention my bday is in march, so i think it might be possible, bad news is, means no ffxi until then
{/cry}

Ooh ooh! I remember something! Try simply putting in the windows install disc as you start up. Reinstall windows, and you should be fine. It won't erase any of your data, and at the very least you should be able to recover backup stuff before a format.

I dont know if this thread is old or not, but like already said, windows install disks come with a repair option, and if that still doesnt work and your like me and have spare HD lying around take on of those, slave your old one. install windows on the spare and then you can save your files via transfere, might take a while though. then you could reformat your broken HD or be happy w/ whatever you found lying around. hope that helps some.
